Caleb Flynn Trial Day 2: David Hammond Reached WHAT Burglary Conclusion?!

David Hammond returned after the mid-morning break with the Caleb Flynn case moving from entry points into the physical evidence collected around Ashley Flynn. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation special agent identified bullet fragments recovered from Ashley, Caleb Flynn's wife and the murder victim, as well as fragments collected from the scene. 

Hammond also discussed latent prints investigators collected. His testimony described another category of evidence documented inside the home without turning the mere existence of a print into an identification. That distinction matters because the defense has argued investigators do not have forensic evidence proving Caleb fired the shots. 

Caleb Flynn, 40, has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges, including aggravated murder. Prosecutors allege he killed Ashley and staged the Tipp City home to resemble a home-invasion burglary. The defense says an intruder killed Ashley and investigators decided Caleb was responsible too quickly. 

The prosecution then asked Hammond where the investigation ultimately led him. Hammond testified that, based on his investigative work, he believed Ashley's death was a homicide and the scene had been staged as a burglary. That is Hammond's conclusion as a state investigator, not a finding the jury is required to accept. 

This portion of Hammond's testimony pulls together the evidence jurors had already heard him describe. Earlier, he questioned whether the garage-door damage looked like a real forced entry. After the break, the testimony moved through bullet fragments and latent prints before prosecutors asked him to state his overall conclusion about the scene. 

For the state, that conclusion supports the allegation that the burglary appearance was manufactured after Ashley was killed. For the defense, Hammond's opinion is exactly the kind of investigative judgment it says should be tested against what the physical evidence can actually prove.
