SPC helps shape Florida’s blue economy
St. Petersburg College is helping address workforce needs in Florida’s growing maritime industry through education and specialized training. SPC programs in areas such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), drone piloting, engineering technology and artificial intelligence prepare students for careers supporting the blue economy, which includes tourism, conservation, energy and food production. The sector employs more than 92,000 people in marine businesses across Pinellas, Hillsborough and Manatee counties. SPC Day celebrates 99 years and surpasses giving goal
SPC Day 2026 brought generations of Titans together at the Midtown Center for a block party celebrating the College’s 99th anniversary and the countdown to its 2027 centennial. The celebration featured live music, food, family activities and a look back at SPC’s history in South St. Petersburg. The day also exceeded its fundraising goal, with 775 donors contributing more than $170,000 for student scholarships, including a $10,000 gift from Suncoast Credit Union. President Dr. Tonjua Williams also shared updates on the new Titan specialty license plate and SPC’s partnership with Jabil to expand advanced manufacturing training.

SPC’s College of Education will host an open house on Sept. 30 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Tarpon Springs Campus, Chris Sprowls Innovation Hub, 600 E. Klosterman Road, for prospective students interested in education careers. Attendees can explore teaching and non-teaching programs, meet faculty and alumni and connect with employers currently hiring. The event will also offer information on certification, scholarships and the Educator Preparation Institute, plus SPC will waive the $40 application fee for new students. SPC launches its own police department
A new St. Petersburg College Police Department (SPCPD) is bringing sworn law enforcement capabilities to SPC’s existing Campus Security operations. Led by Police Chief Andrew MacPherson and Deputy Chief Tracy Smith, the department will expand the College’s ability to respond to and investigate incidents while emphasizing community-oriented policing and relationships across SPC. Sworn officers will be added in phases over the next two years.
