Caleb Flynn Trial Day 3: BCI DNA Team Found WHAT In The Home?

Four Bureau of Criminal Investigations forensic scientists walked jurors through the DNA work in the Caleb Flynn trial, ending with the conclusion Andrea Weisenburger said she reached after reviewing the testing from Ashley Flynn’s home. 

Nicole Augsback, Jennifer Akbar, Phillip Irion, and Andrea Weisenburger described the team approach used to process and analyze DNA evidence. Each explained parts of the laboratory process, while Weisenburger testified that she wrote the final report and made the ultimate conclusions for the DNA evidence. 
Weisenburger testified that the testing did not identify DNA in the home that belonged to someone outside the people who lived there. That testimony goes directly to one of the central disputes in the case: Caleb Flynn’s defense says Ashley was killed during a home invasion, while prosecutors allege the scene was staged to look like one. 

Cross-examination added an important limitation. Weisenburger said DNA cannot tell investigators when it was deposited. She also testified that the mixed DNA on the truck console was mostly Caleb Flynn’s, but she could not say who contributed the additional DNA in that mixture. 

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated murder in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. The jury is now hearing how the physical evidence was tested, what the laboratory could identify, and just as importantly, what it could not.
