Imaginary friends are a pretty normal part of childhood. But what if those friends have names, personalities, favorite foods—and histories that a child couldn't possibly know?

Growing up, James Koppert had companions his family couldn't see. At first, they could have been dismissed as childhood imagination. But James seemed to know surprisingly specific details about them, including stories of children who had died long before he was born.

As the experiences continued, his family was left wondering where that information was coming from—and whether James was imagining these children at all.

But the story didn't end with childhood. As James began looking more closely at his family's history, even more troubling questions emerged about what might have followed generations of the Koppert family.
