They Used Her Middle Name — What the Guthrie Extortionist Knew About an FBI Agent

Someone sent former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer a ransom demand for Nancy Guthrie — and they knew things they shouldn’t have known. The email arrived at a private personnel address and used a middle name Coffindaffer doesn’t publicly go by. For someone who spent a career in federal law enforcement, that level of personal access is alarming. She reported the demand to the FBI. Local authorities told the public these notes were fakes, but Coffindaffer saw something far more sophisticated — crypto-backed demands with masked IP addresses. Nancy’s friend Lauren Serpa was also targeted, receiving a text demanding six bitcoin with claims Guthrie was alive in Mexico and AI-generated images as proof. These aren’t prank calls. These are organized criminals exploiting a real kidnapping. Nancy Guthrie, 84, vanished from Catalina Foothills, Arizona on February 1, 2026.
