I just needed a window, and I kept saying that to myself." She prayed for a window of opportunity, and when it came she jumped in the car with a toddler and an 8-month-old baby and drove away.
In this episode, Joel sits down with a mother of two and survivor of domestic and family violence. She was married for nine years, and not long after the wedding the abuse started. More than a decade later, she spends her time helping other women through post-separation, co-facilitating legal programs from lived experience with the charity Broken to Brilliant. She opens up about being believed, the shame that keeps so many women quiet, how her faith grew stronger through it all, and why healing is lifelong and always on your own terms.
We cover:
- The "window of opportunity" that let her leave, and why so many women never get one
- Her advice for anyone thinking of leaving: "find someone and find something"
- Why seeing a GP and documenting everything matters, and how her GP helped her find the courage to leave a second time
- Coercive control, misidentification and what still needs to change in the court system
- Shame, faith, and healing through art, breathwork and meditation
- Turning loss into legacy and her dream to "change the outcome" for single mums and their kids
