Jake Reiner was a television reporter for ten years and walked up on crime scenes all the time. In August 2026 he sat for his first interview about the one at his childhood home, said he hasn't spoken to his brother, and said he will never understand why this happened no matter how it's explained to him. Chapter three of Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story goes back to the first morning, 4:15 a.m. at the Pierside hotel in Santa Monica, and to the thing a staffer noticed was missing from the man at the front desk.
Late that morning a housekeeper cleaning room 207 found bedsheets hung over the window and blood in the shower, and the guest never checked out. Around one the next morning a Robbery-Homicide detective walked into the lobby and told the front desk he was there for a welfare check on that room. According to a law-enforcement source, he was worried the guest had cleaned up and disposed of evidence, and he taped the room off as a crime scene. By then Nick Reiner had been in custody for hours, picked up at Exposition and Vermont with a red backpack on his shoulder.
The chapter ends where the defense begins. Nick's public defender told the court on September 15 that he has a serious mental illness and a long history of self-medicating, and that his circumstances show how hard treatment is to get. Tony puts that next to the record of help brought to Nick Reiner's door eighteen times. He puts it next to Lindsay Clancy, another defendant with a serious mental illness, who sought psychiatric help repeatedly in the weeks before her children died and got days in a hospital bed. The probate fight over $325,017.49 of his grandfather's money closes the ledger, with his lawyers arguing that the slayer statute requires a determination and not a mere accusation. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty.
