Welcome back to “31 Nights of Frights” on True Crime Sleep Stories. Tonight we go to Chicago in the 1890s, when the World's Columbian Exposition was filling the city with light and crowds, and a block of brick and glass on Sixty-Third Street in Englewood was being run by a man who called himself H.H. Holmes.
You have probably heard the tourist version. Trapdoors. Soundproof rooms. Acid vats. Hundreds of fair visitors who checked in and never checked out. Some of that story is so familiar it feels like fact. A lot of it is not.
What the record supports is quieter and, in its way, worse.
