Sixty years ago, on October 21, 1966, a colliery spoil tip collapsed, and engulfed the Welsh village of Aberfan, killing 116 children and 28 adults.
John Humphrys, the Today programme presenter, was the first reporter to get to that harrowing scene hours later. He tells Oldie columnist Matthew Norman how vividly he still recalls the agony and bravery of the bereaved villagers, desperate to rescue their children.
