The man inside Sandra Birchmore’s apartment the night she died told investigators the child she was carrying wasn’t his. He said the relationship began in 2020 and that they’d been together only a few times in the past year. Phone records and later interviews proved he lied about all of it.
Prosecutors say Sandra and Matthew Farwell exchanged at least 40,000 texts. By the time investigators examined his phone, every message had been deleted.
Sandra’s coworkers told investigators her boyfriend was a Stoughton police officer. A school principal gave them Farwell’s name early on. Sandra had told her boss, her friends, and her third-grade class she was going to have a baby.
Farwell is charged with killing Sandra to keep her from reporting to federal authorities about a relationship prosecutors allege started when she was fifteen. The investigation called her death a suicide and never changed course.
