There are just hours to go until the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. After 70 days and 8000 torch bearers the olympic flame will arrive at the brand spanking new Olympic stadium tonight to start the Games proper.... The last time that happened was in 1948. The war had not long ended and many were surprised the games were going ahead.

Writer and journalist Ulick O'Connor was selected as a "possible" for the 1948 Olympics but didn't make it onto the team in the final selection. But he was at the 1948 Olympic games. He describes what the last Olympic Games in London were like.
