The #OnThisDay take on the anniversary of the American scientist and politician Benjamin Franklin flying a kite to test the theory that lightning was a form of electricity on this day in 1752. He and his son William walked out to a shed in a distant field during a thunderstorm to fly a silk handkerchief kite. After connecting one end of a kite to a metal key placed in a Leiden Jar to store electrical charges, Franklin flew the kite up into storm clouds overhead.
