Social media. Social media. Social media. Social media. If you try to research how to market your company, or advertise your company, or brand your company, you will find article after article after article about how social media is THE only way today to advertise your company. Social Media has its place, just like TV, Radio, newspaper, billboard, etc. But Just because the mass media build up a particular internet platform as the hottest or next hottest thing in social media, does not mean you should rush out and throw your ads and marketing dollars all over it. Blake Morgan, contributor to Forbes.com penned an article in August 2015 titled “When Brands Try Too Hard on Social Media.” Her article starts out with a very strong statement – People hate being marketed to on social media. As a business owner, you understand few people are totally in love with advertising, but do you want to be in an area where people HATE seeing your ads. Ms. Morgan also states “the thing is it can never NOT FEEL strange to have advertising on social. If you’re like me, your eyes glaze over when you see a post is “promoted”. She goes on to Quote an article from Fortune Magazine “Brands are using social media more than ever, and users are ignoring them more than ever. Consumers are developing what used to be called “banner blindness.” Do not get caught up in the hype of marketing’s new shiny toy.
