The legendary British journalist, Sir Harold Evans, the former editor of the Sunday Times and the Times, has told a group of peers that media diversity was "greatly diminished" when Rupert Murdoch purchased the Times in 1981. Sir Harold told members of the House of Lords Communications Committee, he traced the hacking scandal back to "that over concentration of the press which enabled politicians to be blackmailed too easily".
