Paul Martin's Business Update - November 25th

Anyone questioning the value of tourism marketing, event pursuits or the fee that hotel patrons pay when they stay at most properties in this province should have spent the last week in Regina.

The impact of the Grey Cup festivities was unmistakable. Yes, this is about a football game but the ceremony and tradition leading up to the game are a big part of the Canadian identity. It has also has a significant economic impact, estimated at being somewhere north of $120 million. For less than a week, that is truly an event.

Every community – local or national - has a story and with it comes icons and rituals that portray that saga to us mere human beings. The Grey Cup is one that binds the country together in a shared experience – east versus west in a friendly rivalry. The armies supporting each side come together in a ritual of celebration, identifying with players, the warriors represent the two sides.

This is more than a sports game – it is sociological. It has the power to imprint on a community at a human level and at a commercial level as the host rolls out the carpet for the representatives of both sides.
