Paul Martin's Business Update - December 16th

One of the demographic realities that has become more noticeable in this province in recent years is the emergence of the satellite or bedroom community. Whether that is the result of people looking for a different lifestyle or issues around development policies in the larger centres, the fact is more people are commuting from the country to the city.

An examination of this development by the editorial team at Sask Trends Monitor provides some interesting insights into the growth of this phenomenon. But it also shows that a lot of people are commuting from the city to the country for work.

In Swift Current and Estevan, for example, there is a big flow of people from the city to the country. This may be a reflection of the realities of the oil patch. The flow from the two big cities, though, is the other way.

12,000 people commute into Saskatoon every day with a quarter of them coming from Martensville. Warman adds another couple thousand. Regina has about 6,000 with half coming from the Emerald Park, Balgonie corridor. Another 1,500 come from Lumsden and Regina Beach.
