Paul Martin's Business Update - December 23rd

Trying to figure out the state of the labor market is a difficult assignment that has plagued employers for the better part of a decade in this province. We’ve been in a seller’s market where workers have the decided edge. That’s because workers have more choices to pick from.

So, many employers look for a silver bullet in the talent search - looking abroad for help, offering signing bonuses and so on. They also sort through all the data that are generated by government agencies in hopes of getting a handle on the situation.

One new set of numbers offers little in the way of a solution but it underscores how challenging the marketplace has become. This information looks at the number of job vacancies and the number of unemployed people available to fill them.

Saskatchewan it turns out has the second lowest ratio in the country behind Alberta. For every job opening there are three people available to fill it. PEI, by contrast, has 16 allowing employers in that region to be much more selective.
