In June we marked the centenary of one of the most infamous sports events in history..of British sport

Emily Wilding Davison took her place in the crowd by Tattenham corner as the horses made their way to the finishing line. It was Derby day at Epsom Downs Race Course. However Emily wasn't there for the racing. She was there as an act of civil disobedience.

As King George the Fifth's horse Amner bore down, Emily calmly stepped under the railings that separated spectators and competitors and straight into the stride of the oncoming horse. It was an event that transcended sport and made a huge impact in the world of politics that is still felt today.

Exactly what she did and why she did it remains, to this day, a topic of heated debate.
