Merton College bells heard from Merton Street with accompanying street noises on New Year's Day.

The bells rang for about five and a half hours from 1pm on New Year's Day - a real feat of stamina for the bell ringers, three of whom were old Mertonians. For a peal to be successful, the ringers must ring at least 5000 'changes' without any mistakes or breaks. The New Year's Day peal at Merton had 7500 changes in honour of the college's 750th Anniversary in 2014. The bells could be heard across Oxford, including from within Christ Church cathedral. #Merton@750 #HappyNewYear #bells Recording taken from Merton Street at the corner of Magpie Lane (1 January 2014).
