Paul Martin's Business News February 14th, 2014

Public opinion is something that can be changed but…it usually takes a while to change attitudes or redefine a community’s view on any particular subject. To put it another way, the status quo has a lot of staying power and bringing about new perspectives is not always easy. But when a change does take hold, it can be big.

One view that HAS changed is the way Saskatchewan business looks at safety. Initiatives such as Mission Zero have taken hold and tolerance for carelessness or cavalier approaches to the safety of individuals – at home or at work – has evaporated.

And when public attitudes change, public sector agencies tend to pick on that shift. To see it, just scan the daily list of news releases from the provincial government. Those of us who have been around a while know that years ago, a case involving a safety violation by a business showed up in these listings no more than a few times a year. But, if you look now there half a dozen this month alone as Occupational Health is reflecting these new attitudes with tougher enforcement.
