Paul Martin's Business News February 20th, 2014

February is the month with a few unique attributes. First, it’s the shortest one. Second is Valentine’s Day and third is RSP season.

We can’t do much to change the calendar but the last two – Valentine’s day and retirement planning – intersect a bit too well. At least that’s the findings of a survey by BMO Bank of Montreal. As you’d expect a bank doing a Valentine’s survey had to focus on the financial angle so they asked Canadians about whether they’ve discussed retirement and finances with their partner.

It turns out Saskatchewan folks are not the only least likely to have discussed retirement with their partner, we’re not real good at talking the financial aspect of retirement either. Perhaps the most interesting angle of the survey is that both men and women believe they are twice as committed to saving for retirement as their partners. Clearly there is a big gap driving home the bank’s point in saying that people need to spend more energy on planning for financing their retirement and what that portion of their lives will look like.
