The role of the mentor in helping the next generation of business leader in the province was centre stage last night in Saskatoon.

The annual Raj Manek Mentorship Trust dinner attracted a couple hundred business people – both mentors and protégés. Manek – who passed away nearly two decades ago – was a unique character on the provincial business scene. He worked for the provincial economic development department and lectured at the U of S. When he died suddenly the city’s business community launched a trust fund in his name, to further his work as a mentor and teacher.

The event now draws big names and this year it featured Sean O’dea, the founder of the highly successful Canadian coffee chain Second Cup. He recounted the bumps along the road in establishing the company and how key advisors early in his career helped him find a path to success. He encouraged local business leaders to direct more attention to helping the next generation by sharing the wisdom gained through experience. Or as he put it….”you don’t know what you know. There are new players out there who need that knowledge.”
