Paul Martin's Business Update - March 21st, 2014

The month of January was a blockbuster for this province’s manufacturing sector.

This particular part of the economy has been consistently expanding, increasing the value of production and contributing a growing share to the export numbers. But January was especially impressive.

Sales for the month topped the $2 billion mark for the first time, according to StatsCan. That was nearly 10 per cent higher than December and 11 per cent higher than January of last year. It was an increase that dwarfed the performance delivered by any other province, roughly three times the number generated by Alberta. And five provinces were actually in negative territory.

StatsCan says the increase was across a wide spectrum of the sector so it was not a single industry grouping that generated the big sales improvement. Rather it is a sign that the long sought-after dream of a more diversified economy – one that still boasts a strong commodity sector but with other industries in growth mode – may be closer than we thought.
