Looking for refinements in the way we converse.
Use of language is about as natural as breathing but it’s not often that we try to refine the way we use language to improve communication. And, says US-based speaker and language expert Chalmers Brothers, there is a difference between language and communicating….just as there is a difference between hearing and listening.
Speaking to business leaders in Saskatoon and then Regina this week on how to improve communication in the workplace, Brothers offered up a couple interesting new terms that can be added to vocabulary.
One is a responsible complaint. Some organizations, he reports, have developed this tool for raising problems with a co-worker in a responsible and unthreatening manner. When someone misses a deadline they agreed to, the appropriate way to handle the issue is to raise it with the person who missed the deadline – a responsible complaint.
He argues this should replace the more common response… bad mounting or complaining about the co-worker behind his or her back …or as he puts it: recreational character assassination.
