Paul Martin's Business Update - April 7th, 2014

There was a blip in the provincial job numbers in March.

The monthly figures on employment – generated through a survey conducted by StatsCan – were something of a reversal from the trend we’ve been used to. Full-time job numbers declined while part-time went up significantly. And the total numbers were increased but modestly.

Whether this is a new direction or just an aberration is yet to be seen as one month does not make a trend but this survey suggests employers created only 400 new jobs in the month and 4,000 for the year.

Yet, the figures for population were stronger than usual and the number of people either holding or looking for a job rose by 4,000 in the month. As a result the unemployment rate went up.

For the most part, this offsets almost identical numbers – but the other way – last month so, if indeed they are a wash, the rate of job creation is slowing. After a year that produced above-average results we are now seeing gains that are more in line with what had been predicted at this time a year ago.
