Paul Martin's Business Update - April 15th, 2014

There’s nothing like a tough winter to discourage buyers from shopping for a new vehicle.

The latest update on sales of new vehicles in the province is showing a modest improvement in February. After a tough January where buyers chose to sit on their hands, dealers were hoping for a ray of sunshine in February. But, like the weather, it brought only a slight improvement over January.

The number of units that rolled off lots in February was just under 3,400. That’s about fifty units better than January but given that it was a shorter month, the activity was actually a bit better than the numbers showed. Where there was a big improvement though was in passenger vehicle sales while truck and van activity softened a bit more.

Conversations with dealer suggest the same trend – flat – was evident in the first half of March but picked up considerably in the last two weeks of the month. We’ll see if those anecdotal reports are borne out by the numbers when they come out a month from now.
