Paul Martin's Business Update - April 29th, 2014

It’s the power of the patch.

A breakdown of income levels in this province which was part of a report on the Economic State of Cities put together by the Johnson Shoyama Policy Centre and the editors of Sask Trends Monitor puts Estevan in a class all its own.

The Power City, in the heart of the Bakken oil region, stood head and shoulders above other cities with populations of more than 10,000. This is based on data pulled from 2010 tax filings so it is a bit out of date and doesn’t include Weyburn, also in the patch, which crossed the 10,000 threshold a year later.

The report showed Estevan with an average household income of $107,000 that year. That is nearly $20,000 higher than Regina in second spot at $88,000 and Saskatoon at $85,000.

And Estevan also had the largest percentage of people earning more than $100,000 a year. One in six tax-filers in that city exceed the 100K milestone, nearly double the percentage in either Regina or Saskatoon. Estevan also led the pack on earnings coming from employment rather than transfers such as Canada Pension.
