Liam Thornton; I’m Liam Thornton, lecturer in law in UCD School of Law. i have a particular research interest in immigration and asylum law, particular focus and concern is children in direct provision and it’s something that the Ombudsman’s Office has raised on a number of occasions, in particular in 2006, with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and have raised deep concerns with how children in direct provision are treated, so that kind of moral guidance and also from Emily and from others has set down quite clearly what standards are expected from the State. So in the forthcoming ten years, I would hope that the Ombudsman would continue their examination and critique of the direct provision system, I would hope that we would have a child’s rights compliant immigration and asylum system, and I would hope that the ombudsman would feed, very positively into the forthcoming residence and protection bill in arguing for child’s rights standards and the right of a child to be put at the heart for those who are child asylum seekers but also for those who are children of asylum seekers.
