Road Safety Message from Gay Byrne

May 29, 2014, 12:49 PM

Hello, Gay Byrne here for the Road Safety Authority. We are very concerned at the number of deaths on our roads so far this year. Particularly the high number of pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist fatalities. They are our most vulnerable road users. The Gardaí are doing their best to enforce the law under very difficult circumstances, but it's up to everyone to take greater responsibility for how they behave on the road. Last year, five people were killed and five seriously injured over the June Bank Holiday. This is the most dangerous weekend of the year and already it’s started badly. So I appeal to you to watch your speed and slow down, wear your seatbelt, remember if you're caught using your mobile phone in any way while driving, you'll be harshly dealt with. There are no excuses. Remember too that we all share the road and have a shared responsibility to live by the rules. So, enjoy the weekend. Stay alert, stay alive.
