Paul Martin's Business Update - June 13th, 2014

A couple hundred business and municipal leaders gathered in Regina yesterday for the fifth signing of the Mission Zero charter, a pledge to elevate the priority of workplace safety.

The idea was developed by SafeSask and Work Safe as a mechanism for employers – public and private – to declare their support for a campaign to improve Saskatchewan’s standing on the issue of preventable injuries. We stand first or worst in the country overall preventable injuries – at home and at work – and second when looking only at the workplace.

But we’re making headway. In the past five years, since the Charter initiative began, the number of preventable injuries has declined by 20 per cent and 36,000 or 86 per cent of employers registered with Workers’ Comp went injury free last year.

The push now will expand beyond employers to drive home the need to improve safety at home as well….so no longer, as one spokesman put it, do we don our protective gear at work and then head home to mow the lawn in our flip-flops.
