The #OnThisDay take on the anniversary of the arrival of the Statue of Liberty on this day in 1885. It was designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and intended to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence, but was in fact in place ten years later. The statue arrived in New York Harbour in 350 pieces, packed in 214 crates and was re-assembled on a special pedestal four months later.
