Paul Martin's Business Update - October 16th, 2014

It may be a hidden and largely under-developed market.
In recent weeks we’ve been hearing more and more about trade barriers between provinces in this country. It is easier, some say, to do business with another country than it is to foster a commercial relationship in other parts of Canada.
On the surface, that seems a bit out of whack but it is largely supported by a report recently issued by TD Bank. It focused on small and medium-sized enterprises and argues that there is a significant opportunity for improving business ties across provincial boundaries. And it may be a gift waiting to be opened by small businesses.
The West has fared better than most parts of the country but we’ve still got a ways to go on this front. Saskatchewan, for example, has done well on increasing exports of manufactured goods to other provinces. In fact we did better than anyone, probably because of success in the farm machinery category.
But on services the story is not as positive. On this one we were ninth, ahead of only Newfoundland.
