National campaign highlights importance of communication as matter of FAACT

NHS Fife is working to enhance the lives of people with communication difficulties. The multi-agency Fife Augmentative and Alternative Communication Team (FAACT) provides a one-stop assessment, training and support service for people with limited or no speech at all, and the professionals and carers who support them. People with learning disabilities often need particular help with a number of factors that can be taken for granted, such as understanding information, learning new skills and coping independently. Communication generally takes place via the medium of speech or writing, however for the estimated 26,500 people across Scotland who require the use of augmented or alternative means of communication (AAC), this can prove a real challenge. We spoke to Sandra Miller and Jane Donnelly to find out more
