The reasoning behind the push for twinning the highway between Regina and Estevan, or more specifically North Portal, is abundantly clear in the latest figures on international travel into Saskatchewan.

The most significant port of entry by a long shot is North Portal with roughly 35,000 a month entering the province at that point. The next biggest is Saskatoon with about one-quarter the head count entering through North Portal.

Some of these names may come as a surprise, but the other big border crossings are Regina, Regway, Northgate, Estevan and Carievale. All see more than 5,000 people a month entering Canada.

But there is no doubt that the Highway 39 route is by far the most popular port into Saskatchewan. And with the expansion of the Global Transportation Hub at Regina, this will only increase as the primary access to the US market will become even busier, especially for transport vehicles.

The numbers underscore the increased attention on the twinning of this particular highway which has now been elevated to the province’s priority list. http://martincharlton.ca/?p=910 #wetellyourstories
