Tracking the performance of the Saskatchewan economy against Manitoba offers an interesting insight into the growth we’ve seen over the past decade and how consumers in this province conduct themselves.
In normal circumstances we’d say Manitoba is a bigger market. They have about 100,000 more people than we do. But, when you dig through the numbers a bit deeper, you find that on many fronts this province’s economy is actually larger.
A case in point is sales or revenues generated by the food and hospitality sector. On this one Saskatchewan, despite having roughly 10 per cent fewer people, is actually nearly 10 percent larger.
The latest figures we have come from August and they show Saskatchewan sales were just under the $153 million mark for the month. Manitoba, by contrast, generated revenues of $143 million – approximately $10 million lower than this province. It’s a spread that has been consistent throughout the year, showing consumers in this province are far more willing to patronize a restaurant or bar than our neighbors to the east.
