States members have voted that some older people on lower incomes will still get free television licences.

The amendment to the medium term financial plan was put forward by Deputy Judy Martin.

She said the chief minister and the treasury minister both have assistants which cost taxpayers £160,000 a year and that money would be better spent on keeping the TV licence benefit.

Members voted 21 votes in favour to 20 against. A loud cheer followed the announcement of the result.
