Advertisers Meet Your "Audience" - Two Minute Tuesday - 20151013

Yesterday while buying a book at Barnes and Noble, the cover story of the October 4th Bloomberg Business Week caught my eye. It read “Fake web traffic will cost companies more than six billion dollars this year.” Those of us in the advertising community are well aware that fake web traffic has been the internet’s dirty little secret for some time? Investigative Journalists Ben Elgin, Michael Riley, David Kocieniewski, and Joshua Brustin, looked into this epidemic that has eaten many companies ad budgets. They start out with the statement “marketers thought the web would allow perfectly targeted ads….Hasn’t worked out that way.” I talk with advertisers every week who are enamored with the target-ability of the web and think they’ve uncovered a never ending supply of consumers passionately interested in their product or service and are clicking all over their website for more information. Unfortunately, this often is not the case. Increasingly, digital ad viewers are not human. A study conducted last year showed that nearly twenty five percent of internet video ads were “viewed” by software…not people. Viewed by software???…This is fraud! Veteran ad man Bob Hoffman, whom I’ve talked about before was quoted in the story as saying “nobody knows the exact figure, but about fifty percent of you’re spending online is being stolen from you.” If you’re involved with digital advertising you need to check out the full article today. http://www.bloomberg.com/features/2015-click-fraud/ ANNCR: If you like what you just heard and are interested in talking more about how you can grow your business, call or text Jeremy Snider right now at 913-244-4424. 913-244-4424!
