Marketing Is Like Cooking - Two Minute Tuesday - 20160119

If you are a fan of business analogies, you may enjoy “marketing is like cooking.” Being in advertising for twenty years, I’ve learned the number one reason for dissatisfaction with one’s marketing is because the business owner had a desire for immediate gratification. Just as a great meal takes time, doing great marketing takes time to do it right as well. You cannot expect to begin advertising today and see results tomorrow. Most people understand this on an intellectual level, but often do not remember this on an emotional level. This was the whole premise in an article by Tyler Zeck recently sent to. You can find a link to the full article in the show notes. He offers two key points I want to share. Number one – you must select a good cut of meat – Is your organization set up for growth? Could you handle an influx of new business? How good is the customer experience with your business? Zeck states “Marketing a bad business is like cooking a bad cut of steak. It doesn’t matter how you cook it, it’s still not going to taste good.” His second point is “You must invest in the right tools – If you want your steak to be hot, a microwave can get the job done fast, but if you want it cooked right, you need to invest in a barbecue”. The same is true for marketing. If you aren’t using the right tools your business is going to get burnt. Not every meal requires a BBQ. Some need an oven. Not every business can benefit from Newspaper, television, or Social Media. Some need direct mail, radio, or SEO. I feel Most companies need a strong combination of the right tools. If you are questioning which “tools” are right for your marketing, I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly and help you anyway I can.
