Cristo on why we should feel sorry for sufferers of the mental illness that is obesity

As an NHS Trust confirms that obese people in North Yorkshire will be denied surgery for a year as part of a cost-cutting drive, Cristo Foufas pondered why we don't recognise obesity as a mental health problem.

Cristo has been obese in the past himself, and explains that obesity stems from an addiction to food which our minds use for comfort from whatever problems we might be facing in life.

What's more, "I think you should be more sympathetic to the fat than you should be to the drug or drink addicts", he explains, since alcohol and drugs can be given up entirely, but we will always need to eat food to stay alive.
