“Service is the rent that you pay for room on this earth.” Shirley Chisholm

The first black woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Shirley Chisholm served the people for seven terms, often speaking up for the urban poor. She’s not the only wise person who has insisted that service is a duty, not a choice. Eleanor Roosevelt put it this way: “Usefulness, whatever form it may take, is the price we should pay for the air we breathe and the food we eat and the privilege of being alive.”

TODAY I’ll make a real commitment to serve others—either through an organization or on my own.
