Japan’s ambassador to South Sudan has clarified on the role of Japanese troops serving under the UN Mission in South Sudan.
Late last year the Japanese cabinet passed a security law which allows Japanese military personnel in the United Nations the right to exercise collective self-defence, and go to the aid of ally nations under attack.
Ambassador Kiya Masahiko says the troops in South Sudan will continue with their regular engineering tasks and can only come to the aid of UNMISS-related individuals during emergencies and when called upon.
He spoke to Samuel Pawon in this interview.
