Transcript of Week 1 podcast: TOPIC: Foundations of Literacy Learning
Hi everyone, welcome to week one. This week we'll be doing a lot of reading to become familiar with the key topic of foundations of literacy learning and we'll also venture into word study and phonics. The key textbook is Teaching Reading and Writing and the quizzes will come from this textbook. You will read the professor authored readings for week one. These are my own notes on the big topics of the week. I also put a few reminders in there. You can read the professor authored readings fairly quickly, slowing down for ideas that are newer to you.
For assignments this week, we are doing reading response and replies. Please read through the format for this in the course syllabus. There are guiding questions to choose from that are posted on Blackboard. Pick one or more guiding questions to respond to. There's also a format for the replies section. Formal replies are your substantive responses to other people's initial post. Informal replies are your follow-ups to other people's comments that they made to your initial post. I really suggest posting early, when possible. Remember, you can also download the Bb student app and access the discussions that way for checking in on the threads.
During week one, please also post your general introduction about yourself. Post two to three paragraphs in your detailed introduction. Also, reply to 5 or more peers. Finally, there is an orientation reflection that is at the end of the orientation module. There is a quiz in week 1. I hope these tools are useful for you, not just in this course, but in your entire program.
The optional webinar is Tuesday night from 7:00- to 7:45 p.m. The link to join the webinar is on Blackboard under "Entering the Webinars". I will go more in depth into some of the topics and give success tips for assignments! It's also a great way for us to interact in a live format. All pf the optional webinars will be recorded! I really look forward to having you in the course and I hope that you get a lot out of it. Please feel free to email your instructional associate or myself at any time.
Have a great week! -Dr. Semingson
