Mary Wright is the Director of Afasic in Northern Ireland, working for the inclusion of young people in society so that they can reach their potential and fully enjoy what the rest of us may take for granted: independence, work, education and leisure activities. Afasic received 3 years funding from The National Lottery to employ a part time Northern Ireland Development Officer with a wide remit.

Mary says, “Afasic is a parent led charity. The Development Officer post enables us to work closer with parents and support the local groups who also work with young people in the many parts of their lives.”

Many years ago, Mary’s own son wasn’t reaching his full potential despite a brilliant mind. His communication skills needed help. “So I’ve been through that journey with him. Children receive a lot of support in Primary School but my mission was to get them not just through secondary school but into meaningful employment. Communication is central to the adult we become and it is vital to involve young people throughout their development. I hope Afasic gives them aositive sense of self and the skills to carry themselves through life.”
