An American journalist was one of the casualties of weekend fighting between the #SouthSudan army and opposition forces in Kaya, Yei River State.

Army spokesperson Brig. Lul Ruai confirms the clashes erupted Saturday morning when opposition forces attacked their positions, although this could not be verified by the opposition.

Brig Lul says the body has been brought to Juba military teaching hospital awaiting identification.

The US Embassy in South Sudan confirmed the death of an American citizen to Radio Miraya.

The Embassy has extended condolences to the family, but said it could not comment as investigations are ongoing.

Media reports identify the journalist as Christopher Allen, a freelance correspondent.
