Panel Discussion - Why empowering the Girl Child in South Sudan matters

Oct 11, 2017, 08:09 AM

Today is the International #Dayofthegirlchild, a day observed annually on the 11th of October, to promote girls' rights and highlight gender inequalities that remain between girls and boys. This year’s theme is "Empower girls: Before, during and after conflict".

The UN estimates that globally, one in seven adolescent girls aged between 15 and 19 are currently married or in union. In #SouthSudan, the stark reality is that girls are more likely to die in childbirth than complete an education.

The question we ask today is why does it matter to empower girls, what is missing in the empowerment equation? How do we find that missing link, address the unique challenges the girls face and give the girls of South Sudan greater ability to discover their potential?

Our Panelists are; Akuja Mading de Garang – Girls Education South Sudan - #GESS Team Leader, George Mogga, Director General of Planning, Ministry of General Education and Instruction, Monica Abul, a student at Dr. John Garang Memorial National Secondary School and Shaun Collins, Education advisor, UK Department for International Development - #DFID.

Listen to the panel discussion moderated by Irene Lasu on #MirayaBreakfastshow.
