UN Security Council urged to do more to protect civilians, help end violence

The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock, has called upon the UN Security Council to use their influence to ensure that the parties comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law to respect and protect civilians, including humanitarian workers.

He was addressing the UN Security council on Thursday.

Mark Lowock stressed that unless international humanitarian law is complied with, until the fighting ends and until basic services are established, humanitarian needs will remain dire
