Sudan praises Khartoum Declaration signed by President Kiir and Dr. Machar as an ‘achievement for the region’
The Sudan government says the permanent ceasefire agreement signed by the parties is an achievement for South Sudan and the regional as a whole.
The ceasfire is part of a five-point accord known as the ‘Khartoum Declaration’ which commits the parties to implementing a permanent ceasefire within 72 hours and directs the opening of crossings for humanitarian aid.
It also speaks of the freeing of political prisoners and the formation of a provisional government after four months.
The deal was signed in Khartoum by President Salva Kiir, SPLM-IO leader Riek Machar and representatives of the former political detainees, political parties and organizations.
In his remarks, President Salva Kiir said he is committed to respecting the permanent ceasefire.
