"Regardless of the stance of others, we should recognise the healing influence of being able to say sorry for the human effects of all actions caused during the armed struggle." Those are the words of Sinn Fein's national chairperson in the latest addition of An Phoblacht, the republican newspaper. Declan Kearney is asking republicans to say sorrow not for the ira war but for the hurt caused by all its actions. Previous apologies were given to non-combatants but army, soldiers and loyalists were not included. But how important a statement is this? He says he wants republicans to reach out to unionists, but will the move be welcomed or snubbed? And does it go far enough?
