SRSG Shearer: The President’s speech very much carried the theme of peace

President Salva Kiir officially opened the National Parliament on Tuesday in a speech to a joint sitting of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly and the Council of States.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to the peace process and extended an olive branch to opposition leader Riek Machar.
“I am for peace and completely reject war,” were the words of the President.
The Head of the UN Mission in South Sudan, David Shearer welcomed the President’s speech as an encouraging demonstration of his commitment to peace.
Mr. Shearer also underscored the UN's commitment to supporting the people of #SouthSudan in their quest for peace.
