Lighting Designer - Lucy Carter

Season 1, Episode 40,   Jun 19, 2019, 06:00 AM

This week I’m joined by the incredibly talented Lighting Designer, Lucy Carter.

Whilst studying dance & drama, she discovered lighting or (in her words) ‘lighting found her.’ She began exploring the creative possibilities for her own assignments but before long she was working with her fellow students lighting their work.

After her degree, she continued to pursue how to ‘paint’ with light, working with a number of theatres and dance companies by assisting and learning on the job. She went on to work with choreographer & director, Wayne McGregor when he initially set up Random Dance Company in the early 90s - a collaboration that has continued up until this present day.

Lucy has travelled the world designing lighting for opera to art installations. She discusses, in detail, what is required for the role and how it is distinctively collaborative by nature - which keeps her interested and passionate about what she does.

If you don’t know if you’ve seen Lucy’s work (& that is part of the joyous mystery of what she does) do a search on YouTube - it is INCREDIBLE! Huge kinetic panels of light shaping and framing a space, pools of light patterned on the stage floor beautifully choreographed with performers and a piece with no bodies at all!

So many former guests requested to hear from a gaffer or lighting designer discuss what their role involves - I’d say we were successful in getting one of the best!
